LEFT ATRIUM

Posted on 7:30 PM by know about heart

The shape of left atrium is quadrangular. It lies posteriorly and to the left side of the right atrium. It forms the most part (two thirds) of the base of the heart. It also forms most part of the upper border, parts of the sternocostal surface and left surfaces. The left ventricle is thicker than the left atrium.Oxygenated blood comes from lungs through four pulmonary vein drain into left atrium. Then left atrium pumps the blood to left ventricle through mitral or left atrioventricular orifice, which is guarded by mitral valve.
Features:
The anterior wall of the oblique sinus of pericardium is formed by the posterior surface of the left atrium. Interatrial septum forms the wall of the atrium. Two veins are open on each side of the posterior wall of the left atrium called pulmonary veins. Most of the wall of the interior of left atrium is smooth. The interior of left atrium is developed from the absorption of pulmonary veins that open into it. Musculi pectinati are present in the left auricle. They form a reticulum.
DEVELOPMENT:
Left auricle is the potential rite for the formation of thrombi. Rough part of the left atrium is developed from the primitive atrium. Smooth part of the left atrium is developed from the absorption of four pulmonary vein.
