THE AORTA

It is the longest arterial trunk of the body. It receives oxygenated blood from the left ventricle. Then it distribute blood all parts of the body.
It has three parts:
1) The ascending aorta
2) The arch of aorta and
3) The descending aorta
Ascending aorta:
Origin:  It begins from the upper end of left ventricle
Length: 5cm
Course: It starts from the lower border of the third costal cartilage, behind the sternum on left side. Then it runs upwards, forwards and to the right and become continuous with arch of aorta.
Branch:
1) Right coronary artery
2) Left coronary artery
Arch of aorta: It is the communication of ascending aorta, which is situated, in the superior mediastinum.
Course: It starts behind the upper border of the second right sternocartilagenous joint. Then it runs upwards backwards and to the left side of the trachea. Then it continuous with descending thoracic aorta at the lower border of the body of the fourth thoracic vertebra.
Branch:
It has three branches from right to left brachiocephalic trunk, left common carotid artery, and left subclavian artery.
Descending thoracic aorta: It is the continuation of arch of aorta which is situated in the posterior mediastinum.
Course: It begins where the arch of aorta is continuous with it that means left side of the lower border of the body of the fourth thoracic vertebra. Then it descends and terminates at the lower border of the twelfth thoracic vertebra.
Branch:
1) Nine posterior intercostal artery
2) Subcostal artery
3) Two left bronchial artery.
